Spring...Warmer temperatures. Longer days. More time spent outside. All of nature awakens after its long winter sleep. What could possibly turn this joyful season into a season of misery? 

For an increasing number of us, pollen from flowering trees and grasses bring on annoying symptoms. And, never doubt that  April showers only bring May flowers. They also promote an  increase the amount of mold circulating in the air...More allergens to add misery upon misery.

These symptoms result from an overreaction of the body's immune system to what are otherwise normally harmless substances. Instead of ignoring these substances, the body reacts as though being attacked by foreign invaders. The excessive reaction includes production of antibodies which in turn trigger the release of a cascade of inflammatory chemicals. These inflammatory chemicals, including histamine, produce all of the typical hypersensitivity symptoms

Seasonal miseries. Not fun. Not easy to manage.

Trust me. I know from personal experience how miserable seasonal miseries can make you. My childhood was filled with sneezing, dripping nose, itchy eyes and ears, constant post nasal drip, and allergic fatigue. And the drugs my well-meaning doctor prescribed didn't help. Antihistamines made me dopey and decongestants made me jittery. And still the itching, sneezing and general misery continued unabated.

Sound familiar? If  your children suffer with "seasonal miseries," I have good news! 

Here are a few basic tips and suggestions that I have found helpful.
1. Stop all dairy--including milk, yogurt, cheese, puddings made with milk, and ice cream. If the label lists milk.as an ingredient, don't eat it. Many of us are allergic to milk without being aware of it. Because it increases mucus production, it adds to congestion. 

2.  Remove all processed foods by consuming a clean, plant based whole foods diet. Processed foods contain glyphosate residues which destroy the beneficial bacteria in the gut and increase inflammation and can potentiate the allergic reaction to seasonal allergens.

3. Ditching harsh chemical containing personal care and cleaning products helps calm the immune system by removing irritants. I use Thieves Household Cleaner exclusively for all my cleaning needs, and use Lemon essential oil  with sweet almond oil to polish furniture and remove dust. Safe for me, my grandchildren and pets. 
4. To help alleviate symptoms, I recommend the following from Young Living

         + Lavender essential oil is also effective for some allergy sufferers. Most children can tolerate Lavender applied                      directly from the bottle with out dilution to the chest and back or in the diffuser along with Eucalyptus.
         +Surrender essential oil blend is a must have if you suffer with itchy eyes. Simply a scant amount swiped over the                  eyebrows morning and afternoon can provide amazing relief to itchy watery eyes!

These tips are safe and effective  for children over age 2. (They are also quite effective for those of us who are older--even those of us in our second childhood!)
